The Giants Vision

The Giant’s Vision: How a Stream Became a Legacy

In the service of King Dutugemunu, there once stood a giant named Bulatha, a man of strength, yes, but also of quiet observation. While others saw only the land as it was, he noticed its potential. Between two unremarkable mounds, a small stream flowed unnoticed, it’s potential lost to time. But Bulatha saw beyond the present. With deliberate hands and a mind attuned to subtle sounds of nature, he stopped the roaming waters, bending their course to a greater purpose.

What emerged as a result was no mere pond, but "Sora-Bora Wewa", a shimmering expanse of ingenuity, where utility and beauty met as one. So striking was its creation that even the king, in awe, wished to claim it as his creation. However, King Dutugemunu decreed it bear the name of its rightful architect: Bulatha, the giant whose vision had turned a mere stream into a lifeline.

Centuries have passed, but Sora Bora remains a testament to the foresight of one man. Its waters still dance under the sun, not just as a sight to behold, but as the beating heart of Mahiyangana’s fields – and beyond - nurturing life where once there was only silence. The true marvel? That its usefulness has outlasted even its beauty, just as Bulatha’s name has outlasted the ages.

Sitting on the bank of this massive lake made me realise that our ancestors possessed sharper intelligence, even without formal education. Although “Bulatha” was an ordinary servant of King Dutugemunu, appointed to supply betel (bulath) to the king, his intelligence was equal to that of an irrigation engineer. Moreover, he must have possessed high practical intelligence - or in other words, "common sense."

Visit Mediwake Bungalow, and our team will take you to witness this marvel of a product and get to know a little bit more about the lesser known treasures close to Kandy.

Next, I plan to write about Bulatha’s wife “Napatha” whose strength had been the rock behind Bulatha’s endeavour.
